New York, NY- Iona College men's indoor track junior Andrew Ledwith led his squad to a second place finish at the 2008 MAAC Championship at
the Armory Track and Field Center in Washington Heights. Ledwith earned
Most Outstanding Male Track Performer with convincing first place
finishes in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter events.
Ledwith began the night with a 14:53.36 in the 5k event beating out teammate Mohamed Khadraoui by more than two seconds. Sophomore Josh Hibbs and senior Matthew Kiplagat also performed in the event earning points for the Gaels in fifth and sixth place respectively.
In the 3k, Ledwith ended his night by cruising to another two second victory over teammate Jason Weller. Ledwith's time of 8:16.16 was followed by the rookie Weller (8:18.51), senior Abraham Ng'etich (8:26.80) and Khadraoui (8:35.20) as the Gaels took the top four positions in the event.
The Gaels also swept the first four spots in the mile run. Senior Evan Garber earned his first individual MAAC title by running a personal best
4:09.14 in the first heat of the mile. Garber won "cafeteria bragging
rights" as he was followed closely by teammates Ng'etich (4:09.14),
junior Dan Wallace-Periac (4:10.82) and senior Tim Clark (4:11.05). Sophomore Joe Parks finished with the ninth fastest time overall (4:29.84) but cruised to a
win Heat Two of the event, nearly eight seconds faster than his nearest
competitor.
