EUGENE, Ore. -- Tyson Gay, the world sprint champion, narrowly averted disaster in the first round of Saturday's 100-meter sprints here at Hayward Field, slowing down too soon -- way, way, way too soon -- and having to pick it up in a hurry to qualify for the quarterfinals.
