Kaki wins second 1,000 in a week to excel at the KBC Indoor - International Herald TribunePublished by
GHENT, Belgium: Sudanese teenager Abubaker Kaki won his second 1,000-meter race in four days Sunday at the KBC Indoor meet. Kaki, who missed the world indoor record by 1.19 seconds, took the lead with 300 meters to go and held off Ali Mansoor of Bahrain to win in 2 minutes, 16.15 seconds. The 18-year-old Kaki set the world junior record in Stockholm, Sweden, on Thursday with the fifth fastest time indoors, which was only 0.81 off the world record set by Wilson Kipketer of Denmark eight years ago. In the 3,000, Daniel Komen Kipchirchir was looking for the season's best mark, but he faltered so bad that Khaled Ballabas of France swept past him in the final lap to win in 7:43.86 — 1.07 seconds ahead of the Kenyan. Komen Kipchirchir, who had the flu earlier this week, had to be taken in for medical treatment. Komen Kipchirchir is seen as a favorite for the 3,000 at the March 7-9 World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, where he should line up against Tariku Bekele, the younger brother of Olympic 10,000 champion Kenenisa Bekele. Tia Hellebaut of Belgium won the women's high jump at 1.98 meters before barely missing the height of 2.01. Hellebaut, the European outdoor high jump champion, will compete in the heptathlon in Valencia, where the withdrawal of Carolina Kluft has left the event wide open. Saidy Jaysuma Ndure set a Norwegian record to win the men's 60 meters in 6.55 seconds, beating Rikki Fifton of Britain and Vicente de Lima of Brazil. Read the full article at: www.iht.com
