A friend talked Billy Nelson into running for the middle school track team in Bakersfield, Calif., 11 years ago. All these years later it could become a golden, silver or bronze suggestion.

A few years later after he had made peace with the fact he was too small for high school football and had a talent for distance running, Nelson first allowed himself to dream of competing in the Olympics.
